First day of school 2021
August 18, 2021
Today was the first day of school for the 2021 - 2022 school year. I want to say THANK YOU to my students, their families, and my co-workers for helping to make it an AWESOME first day! From start to finish we were safe and had fun!! Our class read some fun stories, learned tons of new procedures, and had a blast getting to know each other better! We even had a surprise visit from Dr. Davis, RSD2's superintendent. These second graders definitely made me proud. I am looking forward to a wonderful year ahead!!

Partner interviews
This week students worked in pairs to interview a classmate, then independently created a write up about the classmate they interviewed. On Friday, we were able to spend our entire writing block listening to each classmate read aloud their write up of their partner.
We had a great time learning new facts about our classmates! This activity is a wonderful introduction for biographies. Next month we will be reading biographies of famous African Americans - students now understand what a biography is. :)
This activity was also a wonderful practice for students on how to gather information, and present the information, to an audience. It can be nerve racking to present/read aloud to an audience. I was beyond proud of our class this week, each one of them presented their work to our class! Way to go, super Second graders!!

We spent time talking about Martin Luther King Jr. Our class set out to understand who Dr. King was and what causes he fought for.
We started by reading Sometimes People March by Tessa Allen, where we learned about ways people come together to speak out against things they believe are wrong.
We learned the word protest, and brainstormed ways people fight for what they believe in. We also read Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport. Students reflected on themes from the story and Dr. King's work, and identified some of the big words that represent MLK. Check out our Jamboard brainstorms below. We're looking forward to celebrating Dr. King's birthday by continuing to dig deep, and do the work of making our world a better, more equal place.

One Word
We're kicking off 2021 right - with new goals and important conversations! Check out the slideshow below to learn about the ONE WORD each student in our class chose for 2021. These words are based on goals students set for themselves and learners, classmates, people, and friends.
Second Grade Writers: A Celebration of Hard Work!
This week, we studied the poems of a mentor text: The Best Part of Me by Wendy Ewald (and the children whose poetry is featured in the book). We found inspiration in several of the poems from, and celebrated the authors' use of interested words, actions, and details as we crafted our own poetry. Check out our second grade authors sharing their work below!

We all made it into a live session!!!
Day 3 of week 3- the first time all 21 students (and their teacher) were logged into a live teaching session. We had to take a picture to remember the time we were all in one place at the same time. :)
eLearning is getting easier each day! I’m so proud of these super smart Second graders!!

With the start of the new year, work got underway on one of the biggest bond referendum projects in our District -- the building of a permanent facility for our school, the Center for Knowledge North. Staging for the construction site and initial foundation work began during our Winter Break. When we got back to school on January 6, 2020, we saw a job-site trailer on the field next to our campus and six-foot privacy fencing along the perimeter of the job site. We are beyond excited to see our school be built! The building is anticipated to be completed in November of 2020.
Place value Group game
Students enjoyed working together to match/identify different forms (numeral and number word) of three digit numbers.

And just like that, a school year comes to a close.
I am sad to say that this is the end of the 2016 -2017 school year. This year was incredible!! I feel truly lucky to be able to say I taught this amazing group of Firsties. They continued to blow my mind each and everyday with their love for learning, strive for independence, and their wit! I will certainly miss this bunch of Kangaroos, but look forward to staying in touch and watching them grow EVEN more. :) Have a great summer, Savvy Second Graders!

Cinco De Mayo Celebrations!
Field Trip to Columbia's Historical Homes Museum
This trip included tours of the Robert Mills house (inside and outside), as well as a tour of the grounds at Seibels house, where students played colonial games AND enjoyed a picnic lunch outside in the gorgeous lawn! The students and I agree, this trip was a huge success!

Field Trip to Cottle {Strawberry} Farms
Our Pumpkin Experiment is complete!!!
The students and I really enjoyed digging up our pumpkin (buried back in October....). We learned valuable lessons about this experiment (mark and measure where you bury, call *891 before you dig, and be sure to ask for volunteers to come in and help dig) BUT overall, this was a huge success. Students were able to see the true effects of landfills and how important it is to recycle/compost items that are able to be recycled or composted. For me, that is a successful experiment!!!

Spring Break News...
Students enjoyed writing (and illustrating) all about their spring break, THEN we had share time! Students really liked having share time with classmates. This was a calm and happy time for all of us, each student got to show off all the fun they had over break! Be on the look out for your Firstie's spring break news in this week's PCF. |

Nasty weather has kept us indoors...
We have had indoor recess ALL week. They don't seem to mind it.... ;)

We will miss our friend Travis!!
The class and are are sad to see him go, but he has promised to be our pen pal and that makes us feel a little better. We are happy to gain a pen pal and will think of him often. We love you Travis! Talk to you soon. :)

Creating backgrounds for the Dance videos we hope to create during our Human Body PBL!
We had a wonderful time celebrating Valentines Day this year!
We played bingo, studied the history of the holiday, used the friendly letter format to write sweet notes to someone (anyone of their choice) that would be made into a valentine, and even exchanged valentines!! I wasn't able to capture too many moments from the day, but here are a few:

Students got to try a new Google App. It is called VoiceThread during Technology this week! I pre-recorded a video, asking students to share about their weekend. I gave an example and talked about watching the Super Bowl with my friends. They really enjoyed recording and watching each other's responses. I'm hope we will be using this App again soon!
Field trip to the Planetarium... and then around to explore some of the S.C. State Museum's exhibits.
Scooting is GrEaT!!!
Today we tried a new method for reviewing our branching strategy... it is called Scoot. Ask your Firstie how it went, and how it works. We had a great time doing this activity and I look forward to using it again soon. :)

Groundhog's Day
We had a great time learning about, and celebrating, Groundhog's Day. We even used the celebration as a chance to create a graph. The class voted {{made predictions}} on whether or not the Groundhog would see his shadow... then we used the graphic organizer to sort through our data. Once we read the tallies, we were able to plot the data on the bar graph, and answer questions about the data. Students really enjoyed the activity, and got to take their "folders" home. Be on the look out for their Groundhog's Day "folder"!

100th Day
We had a blast celebrating the 100th day of school. I asked the students to dress up as a "One-Hundred Year Old"... their costumes were AWESOME!

For HW, students were asked to bring in 100 items and be able to PROVE that there were 100 items by grouping them in 10's. Students had a blast proving to their partner! Check out the slideshow (above) to see some of the items they brought in.
Graphing is Great!!!
We've had a great time graphing data and answering questions (about the graphs and data). I'm sad to leave our graphing unit behind... here are a few pictures I was able to get:

Measuring Capacity!! Our class conducted an experiment, all about capacity!!! We wanted to see which cup would hold the most water. First, students made a prediction and then we tested it.
We used two different measuring cups, to make sure that we had exactly one cup of water, then poured it into the three different containers. The students absolutely loved this activity! Many of them were surprised by the results!! be sure to ask your Firstie which container had the largest capacity. ;)

It's what is on the inside that counts. Today we conducted an "eggsperiment", it helped students see (yet again) that the color of our skin doesnt mean a thing! Just like the eggs, we are all the same on the inside!!
Kindness and Equality This week in social studies, we've been focusing on the importance of kindness and equality. With our upcoming holiday for Martin Luther King Jr., students have been learning all about the importance of Martin Luther King Junior's efforts. He worked hard to change the world, and make the world a better place for all. The students and I read a story called The Crayon Box That Talked written by Shane DeRolf. This book illustrates how everyone is uniquely different, but when we come together we create a beautiful, amazing, group of people. We say, "our class is like a box of crayons, each one of us unique, but when we come together our class is complete."
Our Human Body unit began this week... the students appear to LOVE it! Students will study six of the Human Body systems. This week we began with the skeletal system. Ask your Firstie to teach you all that they've learned about the skeletal system! (You may want to pull up this diagram and have them read the scientific names for the bones! It is impressive to see!)
Here are a few of the activities we have done to help gain more understanding about the Skeletal System:
-Worked together to label our class skeleton (aka Mr. Bones)
then, students labeled their own diagram of the skeletal system.
-Made a model of a hand x-ray, using Q-tips and black paper (one of the students' favorites!)
-Gave Surgery to Mr. Bones Friends: each student got a small skeleton and used their x-ray machine (black paper...) to find the bone that was huring their patient. I called out the scientific name and the students tried to find that bone on their skeleton (some students used their personal diagram as a resource, smarties!!).
-Worked together to put our friend Mr. Bones (a life-size skeletal system puzzle) back together again. The students enjoyed working together on our "operating table" and appeared proud once they had Mr. Bones all back together again.

Ms. Kellett's Class set personal goals to "Ring In the New Year"! To kick off being back at school, and to celerbate the New Year, we created New Year's Resolutions!
First, we read the non-fiction article about New Years Day (found on Britannica Elementary), then students created three personal goals (with the help of their families) for Homework on Monday night. Tuesday morning each Firstie set a goal (made a resolution) that they felt would be accomplished by, or kept up with until, next New Year's Day.
Students will use their phone as a reminder/motivator throughout the year. I enjoyed seeing the students' creativity and pride come out while making their New Year's Resolution.

Polar Express Day Fun!!
As our "winter celebration" the students and I became part of a classic story: The Polar Express written by Chris Van Allsburg. Our celebration was on Friday, the last day before break. Students were allowed to come to school in the PJs, bring a stuffed animal & blanket, and not pack a lunch (we had a pizza party!!).
The week prior to our celebration, students enjoyed several read alouds of the Polar Express. Students became familiar with the story and practiced their retelling/sequencing skills, together in a group, we worked to retell the story, in the correct order and with details. During our Polar Express celebration, students compared the book to the movie. It was great to see all of the similarities and differences the students were able to find. Such a smart group of Firsties!!!
We started the day by watching the movie (our amazing homeroom moms and volunteers set up the stations and lunch while we enjoyed the show). At one point, we paused the movie to enjoy hot cocoa, 3 musketeers, and popcorn!!! (Just like the characters in the book!)
After the watching some of the movie, students and I compared the book to the movie. Then enjoyed our pizza party! After our pizza party the students and I left the room (for recess) while the volunteers set up the stations. WOW!! They did a GREAT job!!!!
Students rotated through six stations: played Snowman Skeeball, Built Elf Hats, played Ring Toss, Made a present for their families, played Snowman Slam, and of course decorated and ate cookies. After stations, students settled back down and finished up the Polar Express movie.
The day was a huge success, and I owe it all to the extra hands. Tanks so much to all of our volunteers!
Muller Road Invited us to their Winter Concert
CFKN students, K-5, attended the Winter Concert put on by Muller Road Middle school's chorus, orchestra, and band. We enjoyed listening to their student body president make a speach, their Beta club present results from the school's can drive, and most of the wonderful music made by the middle school students. My favorite part was when our students were invited to join in!!! They asked our students to sing, rather than be the audience, and the students LOVED it.

Three World Religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam
We created a special World Religions passport to take with us on our learning adventure! This is where we took/will take notes of important facts about each World Religion. During the first week of this unit, we were able to learn SO much about Judaism! Some key things we learned about were Hannukah, the symbolism of the menorah, the Star of David, the torah, the story of the Exodus and Moses's importance in the Jewish religion, and we even were able to play dreidel with our Book Buddies, which our Firsties LOVED!

Also, a huge thank you goes out to our wonderful art teacher, Mrs. Drews, who lead our Firsties in creating a driedel, a model of the Jewish symbol: the Star of David, and a menorah, during our Art Enrichment!
Pumpkin Projects! Students were given a small pumpkin, and the challenge to turn their pumpkin into a character from one of the books they have read. Students had to complete activities about the story they choose (write a retell, answer "wh" questions about the book, and more!). Everyone worked so hard on their Pumpkin Projects- they all turned out GrEaT!! Also, all of our Firsties did a fantastic job presenting them to their classmates!
Science Experiment: The Liquids Race!
We made predictions, which liquid would travel the fastest, the second fastest, and the slowest? Then, we tested our predictions! Students enjoyed seeing the winner fall off of the page. Be sure to ask your Firstie who won the race, was their prediction correct??

Matter, matter, it's everywhere!!
Students have enjoyed learning all about Matter and the characteristics of each state. One day- students were challenged to sort the cards into groups (depending on what they know about each state of matter) then we came back together and checked each partnership's sort. Students had a great time, and did an excellent job with the sort. They sure are a smart group of Firsties!!

Field Trip to EdVenture Children's Museum! Our Firsties had a BLAST at EdVenture! We were able to participate in two hands on classes and then had time to explore the museum with our groups! In the first class we learned about Electric Currents, we even created our own electric current (we were able to light up light bulbs using battery packs, play-doh, and bulbs!!). In our second class, students conducted several "Matter Experiments" (at the end of class we created a slime that students got to take home!!!).
* If you have any pictures of this trip- email them to me, I'd love to add more. :)
{{This is a small shout out and a HUGE thank you to all of the parent volunteers on this trip. I can't stress enough how thankful I am for parent support and involvement, I couldn't do it without you guys' help!!!}}

First Graders Celebrate Thanksgiving Feast similar to the Native American and Colonists we've been learning about.
Here are just a few pictures from our Thanksgiving Feast! We enjoyed creating attire and dressing as Colonists and Native Americans. After our feast, my mom came in and read the story of The First Thanksgiving. The students and I enjoyed having her as our guest reader! After the read aloud, students created bracelets to help them re-tell the important details from the First Thanksgiving. The bracelets were part of our Homework that evening, students had to use their bracelet to retell the story of The First Thanksgiving. I received feedback (from students and parents) about this activity- overall it was a hit. :)

Nutrition, and keeping our bodies healthy! In September, our class was learning all about Nutrition (and other ways to keep our bodies healthy). During our unit of study, students became familiar with the new diagram MyPlate (a diagram that helps people have a healthy diet, similar to the traditional diagram the Food Pyramid). Students were given a challenge: use local grocery store ads to create a healthy plate of food for yourself. The students did a GREAT job with this activity!! Once they filled up their personal plate- they came to the carpet and worked together to fill up our class plate.
Palmetto Pride's Litter Trashes Everyone A puppet show put on by (yes, our dear friends...) Columbia Marionette Theatre! Our students were super happy to see their puppeteer friends at their school, with an entirely different show! This show did a fantastic job of teaching (well, really, reminding....) our students of the importance of taking care of our environment, and that litter trashes everyone! Here are a few pictures I was able to capture of this show:
(side note..... I asked before posting, Columbia Marionette Theatre has allowed me to take pictures..... and encouraged me to post them.)

Our First Field Trip of the year!!! We have been studying Cinderella stories from around the world (as part of our Core Knowledge Curriculum) for quite some time. The students have become familiar with the story elements of different Cinderella stories- we decided to treat them with a special version of Cinderella...... a Marionette Puppet show of a modern Cinderella story!!!
We had a local theater, Columbia Marionette Theatre, come to our sister school and put on their production of Cinderella. The students (and teachers) loved it!!! Here are a few pictures I was able to capture:

Daily Five: Readers use strategies to become better readers!
We have been working hard to create the habit of asking and answering questions before, during and after we read in hopes to build up our comprehension of what we are reading.
Students have practiced asking questions, and finding the answers in text while they read. Today, I challenged the students to work and pairs to answer the "wh" questions about a non-fiction book.... they did GREAT! I was impressed with their collaboration and work ethic. All partnerships completed the task- and appeared to have a great time! Here are a few pictures:

School Fundraiser Update
Wow! Our class is doing a wonderful job with selling items for our fundraiser! Way to go Kangaroos!!
I just have to share this fun fact, We are two people away from having 75% participation!!!! It was my goal to have 75% participation. If you haven't sold any items yet, maybe you can get a few sold over the weekend?? I totally understand that some families are too busy, and some do not want to get involved. Please know this is not a required task. I am simply voicing my personal goal.
I see the fundraiser as a fun way for families to interact and help out our school. I am not trying to add any stress or complication. It is just, WE ARE SO CLOSE!! I feel confident we can reach our goal of 75% participation!! Keep on doing great, Kangaroos!

Today, our class got to celebrate, and learn all about, Constitution Day WITH our book buddies!
This year our buddies are students from Mrs. Drucker's fourth grade class!! We were so excited to have them come down to our room and enjoy a read aloud, by Ms. Drucker, of We The Kids:The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States, illustrations and forward are by David Catrow.
Students enjoyed a read aloud on the Elmo camera, and a quick discussion of what the U.S. Constitution is. Ms. Kellett shared her model of the U.S. Constitution, and we discussed the difference between the model and the real U.S. Constitution.
Some of the fourth grade students recited the Preamble of the Constitution. They then informed the First graders that they had learned the Preamble in second grade, this made the Firsties' eyes bulge! ;)
After the read aloud, and whole group discussion, students enjoyed a partner activity! They matched words to the U.S. Constitution to the "kid friendly" vocabulary. This was a fun activity for all!! Check out some of the pictures below:

I look forward to our future projects/experiences that we have planned for the future Fridays! We will continue to meet with Ms. Drucker's fourth grade class on Fridays for the remainder of the year. Be sure to ask your Firstie how they like bookbuddies, I'm sure they have lots to share. :)

Numbers to 10 Over the past few weeks, we have been studying numbers to ten. Students have been enjoying fun math games, math activities, and even math quizzes! I am super proud of my Firsties hard work. We are certainly beginning to show that we know all the ways to make ten! This week, for homework, we will be teaching our families how to play our new game "Making 10 Go Fish". We are super excited to come home and share this game with our families. Parents, and family members, PLEASE be sure to help your Firstie be responsible with our game pieces. The games that will be sent home are the same games we use in class. Please help us take care of our materials so that we have the games to play.
Check out some of the fun we were having in our classroom, during our Numbers to Ten unit:
-We used Linking Chains to Make 10.
-We made a rainbow to make 10.
-We played card games!!
-We used shake and spill counters to see how to make 10.
-And, we even made a "craftivity" (that we took home) to help us see the two parts that make ten.
We have had a blast building up our numbersense of numbers 0-10. Next, we are moving onto chapter two, Numberbonds!! :)

Welcome to my new classroom website! As I mentioned in my email, I am trying something new this year. I am hoping to use this website as a common place to share all the great things we are doing at school and have a useful purpose for our parents. This website is home to links that are useful for parents and students, a list of useful contacts for other teachers/staff, our homework calendar, and regular updates and photos. I would love for this to be a genuinely helpful tool for parents and students, and I welcome your feedback in regards to what else you would like to see posted. I would also love to share any resources, websites, or special events you have found helpful/exciting for your first grader!
Our First 13 Days of First Grade: The students and I have had a great start to the school year! During our first thirteen days of school we sure have done a lot: successfully reached 8 minutes of reading stamina, created our class list of rules, signed our contract for good behavior, met all of our related arts teachers, checked out books from the library (twice!!), tried one related arts schedule and switched to a new one, dealt with severe weather and an early dismissal, studied Cinderella stories from Around the World, completed our study of maps and globes, and I could go on! Luckily, I will be updated the blog regularly and there will be more detailed explanations (with pictures!) of all the things we are doing in school.
Thank you for taking the time to checkout our website (and my very first blog post)!! I appreciate your support and involvement very much.
